50 Cats Discovered in Arizona Home

In Mesa, Arizona, police evacuated almost 50 cats from a home on Tuesday morning. The Maricopa County Sherrif’s Department says that officials who undertook the evacuation had to wear breathing masks because of the poor air quality inside the house. The cats were crawling all over the furniture and carpet and did not appear to have a constant caretaker. When they were taken out of the home, the cats were taken to shelters for the time being while the department chooses where to put them. The owners of the home are now accused of hoarding kittens and cats in their house to an unhealthy and abusive degree.

According to the Animal Legal and Historical Center, animal hoarding is a type of abuse that affects thousands of pets each year. Normally, animals that are hoarded are denied proper care and nutrition and live in their own waste. Most of the time, these animals suffer from diseases, and may even feed on or live with corpses of animals that have passed away. Normally, people hoard animals because of a mental illness or a misunderstanding that hoarding is helping these pets to have a home. In every state, law enforcement has the right to get involved when there is hoarding involved. Some states will even consider hoarding a felony offense.

Other states force animal hoarders to undergo mental counseling after they are charged. In Arizona, offenders can be charged with animal neglect and arrested for their crime.
