Officials Launch "Buckle Up Arizona" Campaign

Officials and law enforcement agencies across Arizona have launched the statewide “Buckle Up Campaign” to encourage motorists to wear safety belts and remind them of current laws. The initiative is part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign and is being supported by the Phoenix Police Department, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, and other agencies.

Here are a few details about the campaign:

  • From May 18 through May 31, Arizona authorities will be increasing efforts to enforce state seat belt and child safety seat laws. The high visibility enforcement will apply a zero tolerance policy for anyone who violates the law.
  • Arizona’s seat belt law is a secondary law, which means that authorities can only issue citations to motorists when they are stopped for other violations.
  • The state’s child safety seat law is a primary law that allows officers to stop and ticket drivers if they notice young children not using safety seats.

Increased enforcement of child safety seat and seat belt laws are intended to remind motorists that these laws matter. Statistics have long shown that seat belts greatly reduce the risks of injury and death in auto accidents by as much as 50%. Child safety seats can also reduce the risk of infant deaths by 71% and 54% for toddlers.
