Abuse Victim's Family Sues Sheriff's Office

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office wasn’t expressly responsibly for young Sabrina Morrison’s injuries, but her family claims that the sexual abuse could have been prevented at the sheriff’s office taken pains to arrest the offender. According to their claim, the Morrison’s presented clear physical evidence of sexual assault five years before the Sheriff’s office chose to arrest Patrick Morrison. This man had been sexually abusing Sabrina, a child with developmental challenges. Sabrina’s family argues that they could have prevented some of the assaults had Patrick been taken to prison earlier. The offender has already pleaded guilty to three counts of child molestation. He will be sentenced for his crimes next month.

Sabrina’s family is passionate about exposing the mishandling of sex-crime cases at the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office. The office was forced to reexamine 432 cases after officials found that the agency was hiding many of the allegations and refusing to deal with the issues. Patrick was found out after Sabrina admitted that she was sexually assaulted to her middle-school counselor. The Sherriff’s and deputies in the area went to the Morrison home and did an investigation, in which they didn’t find any hard evidence. Still, they took various items to a lab for testing. The case was closed for five years, and the Morrison family continued to allow Patrick to live on their property. It wasn’t until June 2011 that the case was reopened.

At this point, Sabrina had been repeatedly molested by her uncle. The family was outraged that this had happened, and believe that the level of psychic pain she has had to bear is unforgivable. They want to Sheriff’s Department to provide compensation which they will use to help comfort Sabrina after years of trauma.
