Memorial Day Weekend DUI Task Force Increasing Patrols Throughout Arizona

Memorial Day Weekend is here and for many that means more holiday parties, celebrations, and reasons to drink. Knowing that Americans tend to celebrate with alcoholic beverages, law enforcement agencies across the country ramp up their efforts to keep public roads and highways safe by cracking down on drunk and impaired drivers. This is exactly the case in communities across Arizona.

This past weekend saw active efforts by local and state authorities to increase DUI patrols in many communities. Several agencies have reported a number of DUI arrests during their increased enforcement periods during the weekend. These efforts often consist of:

  • Sobriety Checkpoints - Sobriety checkpoints involve a number of law enforcement officers stopping vehicles in a pre-determined location to look for signs of impairment. Officers also check drivers to make sure they are properly licensed and do not have warrants. Checkpoints are typically held at times and in locations with high rates of alcohol-related incidents.
  • Saturation Patrols - Saturation patrols involve more officers being placed on patrol, many of whom are trained to look for signs of driver impairment, which may include various traffic violations, operating a vehicle without headlights, swerving, and unsafe speeds.

Authorities anticipate that the holiday weekend will result in possibly hundreds of DUI arrests, as these days record some of the highest rates of alcohol-related traffic accidents. A multi-agency DUI task force will continue to enforce Arizona DUI laws using increased enforcement tactics through the year.
