A Clovis couple was awarded $5.7 million for medical bills and emotional
pain this week after their van was rear-ended by a Southern California
Edison truck two years ago.
This came as a surprise to some, like a local attorney who commented that
neither person was even left paralyzed after the truck accident.
Jurors at the Fresno County Superior Court deliberated for three days before
deciding to award Manuel Ornelas, 42, nearly $160,000 for lost wages and
medical bills, as well as $1.2 million for future lost wages and medical
bills. Jurors also gave him $4.16 million for past and future emotional
suffering and physical pain. As for his wife, 36-year-old Corina Ornelas,
she was awarded $2,426 for medical bills and $200,000 for loss of consortium
and emotional suffering.
Although the verdict was not what the prosecution hoped for, both sides
were able to shake hands in Judge Alan Simpson's courtroom after the
verdict was read.
